About us

Hello, I’m Dr Sophia Deboick, a Study Skills Tutor based in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. I founded The Degree Doctor to offer dedicated specialist study skills support to higher education students in receipt of Disabled Students’ Allowance. I have experience of the higher education sector as a tutor and researcher (including at Russell Group universities), and I worked as a Study Skills Tutor at one of the largest HE-providing further education institutions in the country before setting up The Degree Doctor.

With an expert understanding of the HE academic environment, I provide a service that is tailored specifically to the needs of degree students. I work exclusively with adults and my approach to study skills support is to work collaboratively with students as equals, providing a friendly and approachable service. I am fully qualified to work in SpLD support at university level and have completed a postgraduate course in dyslexia and literacy difficulties, gaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Education (PGCPSE (Open)). I am DSA-QAG registered as a non-medical help provider, have AMBDA FE/ HE status (Associate Membership of the British Dyslexia Association, Further Education/ Higher Education), and have membership of ADSHE’s Quality Assurance scheme (registration number ADSHEQA106).

I have supported many students towards degree success and have a track record of building strong, supportive working relationships with them. My students find their tuition sessions a pleasure rather than a chore and benefit from the relaxed atmosphere I create. Here is just some of the feedback I have received:

The support has been constant and has helped me fully engage in my studying. I am able to organise my workload in a calm, friendly and comfortable environment. Thank you for all your support and extra guidance – you handled my worry with care.
Matt, BA (Hons) Early Years Education.

I honestly think I wouldn’t still be on the course if it hadn’t been for your support. The sessions have made me feel much more confident and you have given me lots of positive reinforcement. The flexibility of being able to arrange my study skills sessions around my placements has been great.
Margaret, BSc Adult Nursing.

Words never do justice to what I wish to say, so by sharing my views and insights with her confidentially, Sophia assisted in focusing and structuring my way of communicating into essays that I am very proud of. I achieved my foundation degree and hold in high regard every minute Sophia spent at my home, allowing me to work in familiar surroundings, with my books and notes at hand. I recommend that everyone who claims DSA uses the Degree Doctor.
Sam, FdA Counselling.

I look forward to hearing from you, answering any questions you may have, and finding out more about how I can support you to achieve your goals.
